A Breathtaking Concept

The Aquarium will house five permanent aquatic exhibits, one for each of the five oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Arctic, the Southern Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. In addition, rotating exhibits will focus on the seven seas of Planet Earth.

A Leader in Ocean Research

Our Research & Science Center will attract scientists and researchers from around the world. Together with the world-class School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, the Ocean State will become a mecca for ocean research.

A Champion of the Environment

The Oceans Aquarium will be environmentally friendly. We plan to use wind, solar and geothermal power in our design, and the facility will house a small desalinization plant to supply fresh water.

A World-Class Tourist Destination

Tentative plans call for an IMAX theater onsite, as well as adjacent restaurants, shops, and hotels. Water taxis, light rail, and shuttle buses will bring visitors to Oceans Aquarium, reducing automobile traffic in the vicinity.

The Oceans Aquarium Research & Science Center, is pleased to announce a forthcoming expedition lead by its Explorer-in-Residence, Michael Lombardi, to explore and document the natural history of the mesophotic, or ‘middle light’, zone from 200 to 500 feet in the Exumas, Bahamas, from April 28 through May 8, to be hosted at the John H. Perry Jr. Caribbean Research Center – a facility synonymous with a long lineage of advancements in marine technology and innovations in ocean exploration.

This expedition is an extension of a successful November project to Andros, Bahamas, in which the team worked to 430 feet, or more than 3 times the depth of conventional scuba diving.
